FALLING BLUE I guess we were running out of our league Coming up for air without the room to breath With a dime store wristwatch, a pawnshop ring An empty suitcase and a broken dream Falling blue under your spell Staring at the bottom of a wishing well Tearing through this life like a wrecking ball I would give you anything to break this fall I would give you anything to break this fall This dead end road took us the long way around From Saint Marks place to this border town Watching the sunrise through a cracked windshield With nothing left just borrowed time to kill Falling blue under your spell Staring at the bottom of a wishing well Tearing through this life like a wrecking ball I would give you anything to break this fall I would give you anything to break this fall The truth cut through this empty room Like the blade of a rusty knife When you recalled everything you saw Your life flashed before your eyes Your life flashed before your eyes I don’t know where but we took a wrong turn Lit this fire just to watch it burn Is it the wasted time or the wasted breathe Or something new that scared us both to death Falling blue under your spell Staring at the bottom of a wishing well Tearing through this life like a wrecking ball I would give you anything to break this fall I would give you anything to break this fall Falling blue under your spell Staring at the bottom of a wishing well Tearing through this life like a wrecking ball I would give you anything to break this fall I would give you anything to break this fall

SHAKE IT LOOSE NO. 2 Shake it loose and pull yourself together Shake it loose and tell me what you see The weight you haul around, will drag you to the ground Running back and forth, acting like a clown You think you’re the only one who’s sorry The grass is always greener so they say Stop digging your own grave Think of all the time you’ll save Shake it loose and set yourself free You’re half right, it’s not a fair fight When you pick yourself apart the way you do It’s never too late to fix what you break But everybody wants what’s best for you So shake it loose and pull yourself together Shake it loose and tell me what you see You hold onto a grudge that just won’t seem to budge You want to be the victim, the jury and the judge You think you’re the only one who’s sorry The grass is always greener so they say Stop digging your own grave Think of all the time you’ll save Shake it loose and set yourself free It’s your turn to feel the slow burn Why you’re sinking in the truth like it was quicksand There’s no doubt you’ll find a way out All you gotta do is find a helping hand So shake it loose and pull yourself together Shake it loose and tell me what you see The weight you haul around, will drag you to the ground Running back and forth, acting like a clown You think you’re the only one who’s sorry The grass is always greener so they say Stop digging your own grave Think of all the time you’ll save Shake it loose and set yourself free Shake it loose and set yourself free

about

“Saved” is the latest single from Bob Collum and the Welfare Mothers, due out on Fretsore Records on February 19th. The single is a remake of the gospel- flavoured tongue-in-cheek Leiber and Stoller hit - first recorded and popularised by LaVern Baker, and later covered by Joe Cocker and Elvis Presley. “Saved” serves as the focus single to the upcoming album ‘This Heart Will Self Destruct’, set for a March 19th release.

The track is released as a digital EP that also includes non-album tracks “Falling Blue” and “Shake It Loose No. 2”.

“I first heard this song when NBC replayed the 1968 Elvis comeback special in August of 1978. It's always been a big favourite of mine and later I discovered the LaVern Baker original and The Band's version on their Moondog Matinee album. Of course, what sounds like a traditional gospel song was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in an office in New York.”

A collaborative affair, Collum attributes the world-class musical standard to his band The Welfare Mothers and its honorary members; “The Welfare Mothers and myself had been doing this one live for awhile and we knocked out our version at the end of the recording session. It's fun to do someone else's song and this one is a hoot to play. The band sound fantastic and I believe this was a one-take recording. The choir features Paul Quarry, Mags Layton, Martin Belmont and Paul Ambrose evoking if not the Holy Spirit at least spirits of some kind or another.

Mags once again proves why she is one of the great fiddle players on this track with a performance that will put the fear of god into you.”
Born in Oklahoma, the now Essex-based Bob Collum is a self-proclaimed Anglophile since his teenage years. Raised by his grandparents on the likes of Bob Wills and The Carter Family, Collum has embraced the sonic-fusion of transatlantic influences brought through the ongoing ripple effect of The Beatles. What results is a combination of these influences in his own artistic output; home-grown, transatlantic and British are all evident on the upcoming album ‘This Heart Will Self Destruct’.

Early tastes of the album include the Johnny Cash-inspired single, “From Birmingham” which received support on the likes of Meridian FM, Soho Radio, Cambridge 105 and CMR Nashville

about

Bob Collum and the Welfare Mothers London, UK

Bob Collum & the Welfare Mothers make a cool noise. How cool you ask? Well, it's kinda alt-country, alot of rock & roll, add a smidgen of folk, and a dash of blues. Stick in a potent dose of guilt, a dollop of sin, a drop of salvation (just one drop), and equal measures of joy and sadness ... more
